M51 – The Whirlpool Galaxy

After a LONG winter, I was finally able to get out with the telescope and get some imaging in. Here’s M51, The Whirlpool Galaxy. As you can see, it’s actually two galaxies colliding. Eventually the smaller one will merge with the larger, spiral galaxy. M51 is located about 37 million light years away and is very near the end handle star of the Big Dipper.

Happy Easter

Easter has always been a big holiday for our families. This year we spent most of the weekend at Grandma and Grandpa’s and did the typical Easter stuff – Easter egg hunt, egg coloring, and eating way too much candy.

Moon Made of Cheese!

One of my favorite sites is the Astronomy Picture of the Day. The entry for April 1st shows evidence that the moon is indeed made of Cheese. Yum!
