Broken Summer

Jul 8, 2008 by Jared Smith

We’ve all been having an awesome summer – camping, swimming, hiking, boating, and more. Now, this…

Abbie fell off the trampoline today and broke her arm. I mean, she REALLY broke her arm. Check the X-ray if you want. Pain, agony, weeping, and panic commenced, and even Abbie cried a little bit. She was a real trooper through all of it. It was, as you can see, a pretty nasty break. Our pediatrician and the ER doctor both told us they wouldn’t even touch it, but luckily an orthopedist, after a lot of effort, got it set almost perfectly. A miracle! She has to keep her arm in the air and on ice for the next couple days and will be in a cast most of the summer, but I think she’s going to be just fine.

Abbie's is all smiles

I know some people get a bit squeamish looking at such things, but if you want to see pics of her arm, you can check them out here and here (it’s not too bad – no blood, just a crooked arm).

  4. I tried thinking of a witty comment, but I don’t think I can top Steve’s. +1 to you good sir.
At least they didn’t have to cut it off like the Captain, but then your halloween costume with Bryan as Mr. Smee would have looked pretty cool.

It looks really bad, I hope it heals quickly.
Eva, I bought a ticket to come out for the Godfrey Gathering, I’ll only be there a couple of days, but at least I’ll be there.

  7. My daughter just broke her arm today. The X rays look exactly the same. I understand exactly what you went through with her in the hospital. Because while my daughter was tough, I was falling apart seeing that. Now it is 6 weeks at least with a cast. She is only 5. How did u keep her occupied?

  8. my daughter had a broken arm like that. but much worse. he had a genreal anesthetic the first time she came into A&E, and then 3 weeks later, it had been knocked at school when i told her to stay inside, which it made me a bit mad. we stayed at hospital for ages, and then she had sugery to put metal plates in. she was really upset when she had to have this done. and then the third time, about 1 week later, this boy in her class punched it. apprently my daughter said punch my cast. so really my daughters fault. and then she had to have the bones pushed back together. she was really really upset at the end, and had the cats on for about 3 months, and then just a sling with a bandaged for 2 months. it was a herrific experience. oh, i will tell you how she did it, she was bullied at school and the bullies twisted it or something. when she was there, she was in an ambulance, screaming her head off. she refused any pain reliefe, but in the end, they put her to sleep to stop the screaming. she woke up and was really upset. waiting for the x ray results was the worst bit. then hearing that she had to have sugery because she was dreading not to have it.
